Education

Through inquiry and discovery-learning, SHUMLA programs bring the past to life. Participants experience a sense of wonder and develop a keen awareness of the active role heritage plays in shaping lives, past, present and future.

SHUMLA is committed to improving people’s lives through multi-dimensional education. We use natural and cultural heritage to guide participants on an exploratory journey through the social, contextual and environmental realities that define their existence and experience. Through discovery-learning and hands-on activities, learners make direct and personal connections with their ancestors’ use of materials, land and art, and professional educators learn new techniques for bringing cultural resources to life in any environment. At SHUMLA, the landscape is our blackboard and cultural heritage is our text.

No matter what the age or group affiliation, SHUMLA’s staff can build the program to meet your needs. SHUMLA serves children and young adults associated with both public and private institutions, independent adult learner groups, college students, corporate retreats and military programs. For our training partners in public education, SHUMLA’s activities are correlated with STAAR objectives and meet TEA Educational Field Experience guidelines. Staff can build programs to meet a standards-based curriculum, or we can create programming and assessments to address your learners’ specific needs.  SHUMLA programs are:

  • Flexible – can be tailored to participants of all ages and academic backgrounds,
  • Scalable – can be modified to accommodate the size and objectives of your group, and
  • Affordable – less expensive than programs at similar facilities.
