Board member Chris Crosby.
The SHUMLA School board is enriched by Chris Crosby's experience in education, understanding of how it impacts children, and familiarity with not-for-profit organizations.

Christine E. Crosby

Chris Crosby earned her B.A. in Elementary Education from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.  She then received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, following that with Postgraduate work in developmental psychology from the Educational Psychology Department, at The University of Texas at Austin.

In her private practice she works with individuals, couples, and families using a variety of approaches to address emotional and relationship issues.  For the past ten years, much of her practice has focused on the diagnosis and treatment of girls and women with eating disorders and associated self and body image concerns. She has worked with staff and peer assistance groups and given talks to students and parents at public and private schools, including St. Stephen's Episcopal School, St. James Episcopal School, St. Andrew's Episcopal School, Lake Travis Middle School, and Austin Community College. She serves as a psychotherapist and educator/consultant with Remedy, a holistic health clinic in Austin, and is a partner in Mapache, a media and documentary production company.

As a community volunteer and not-for-profit board member she has chosen to focus on education, women's issues, the arts, and environmental issues.  She has worked extensively in strategic planning and development, exhibit and event planning, and volunteer coordination.  As a founding member of the Austin Children's Museum she worked essentially as an unpaid staff member for three years, helping to write the Museum's goals and mission statements, develop job descriptions and hire key staff, design, construct, and move traveling exhibits, and organize and coordinate community-based events and programs.

In addition to serving on the SHUMLA School board, Chris is currently on the board of the Girls' School of Austin and is a member of the Past Presidents Council of the Austin Childrens' Museum. In the past 20 years she has served on the boards of several social service and environmental not-for-profit organizations in Austin. Her present role is primarily in strategic planning.

Her work with the Children's Museum and with SHUMLA has reinforced her beliefs that children learn best when given opportunities to explore the world in their own unique ways, with guidance from adults who respect their individuality and can provide rich and varied contexts for learning.  Her community service work has been guided by a continued commitment to the goals of educating whole and healthy, independent humans who value and respect the earth and each other and have the heart, desire, and ability to make a difference in the world.
