Board member Emil Zuberbueler.
Emil continues the involvement of the Zuberbueler family with SHUMLA as the Secretary of the board. He supports SHUMLA, its goals and programs, because they match his interests in understanding and preserving the natural, historical, and cultural aspects of the Lower Pecos region.

Emil M. Zuberbueler

Emil Zuberbueler grew up in Comstock, Texas, exploring the canyons of the ranch originally acquired by his great-grandfather, John U. Zuberbueler, and grandfather, Emil Zuberbueler, in the late 1800's.

He graduated as Valedictorian from Comstock High School in 1973, and attended St. Mary's University in San Antonio before transferring to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.  He graduated from Sul Ross with a BS in Industrial Arts in 1977.

In 1983, while working at IBM in San Antonio, Emil began volunteering with St. Benedict's Hospice, visiting patients with a limited life expectancy, listening to their stories and providing a helping hand to them and their caregivers.  In 1986, after receiving his state registration as a massage therapist, he added this modality to his visits with patients.  He continued as a volunteer until 1992, when he began working in a hospice program in various administrative roles.

As Secretary of the SHUMLA board of directors, Emil brings a commitment to raising awareness and appreciation for the fragile treasures left us by ancient keepers of the land.  His goal is to help ensure protection of these resources, while fostering partnerships between local ranchers and all those interested in continuing study of the ways, culture and beliefs of the ancestors.

Emil is currently Senior Director of Innovations and Outcomes for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in Alexandria, Virginia.  His daily focus is on developing written and web-based educational materials, and implementing systems and procedures to foster and promote efficient, high quality and cost-effective administrative support for staff, member organizations and individuals.

He lives in Washington, DC, with a view of the Potomac, a constant reminder of the Pecos and Rio Grande rivers that have been so influential in his life.
