The Shumla School campus is located in Shumla, Texas approximately 50 miles
west of Del Rio. Shumla was established in 1882 as a section station on the
Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway. It was named for a Turkish
fort in the Balkans that was surrounded by hills much like those found near
the Shumla School. At a site just 1 mile east of the Shumla School, east
meets west. The railroad tracks from the east and the tracks from the west
were ceremoniously connected at this location by a silver spike on January 12,
1883.
The Shumla School is situated within the archeological heartland
of Texas the lower Pecos River region. No other region in the Americas is
known to contain such a concentration of well-preserved hunter-gatherer sites. Surrounding the School there are more than two hundred rock
shelter sites, most of which contain archaeological deposits and many of
which contain elaborately painted murals dating back to over four thousand
years ago.
This rugged, semi desert landscape is incised by deep canyons and
beautiful rivers. The Shumla School property lies between the Pecos River
and the Rio Grande where the two rivers bend to within one mile of each
other.
Please contact the Shumla School if you would like to arrange a visit,
and we will provide you with precise directions to our complex.
