  Job Description:  

Associate Director is a new position within our growing organization. The Associate Director will work closely with the Executive Director, the staff, and partner organizations to further the mission of SHUMLA. The Associate Director will plan, organize, and direct the day-to-day operations of the organization. This position is currently supported through grant funds and continuation of the position is dependent on future funding.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations Responsibilities (35%)

  • Supervise staff on a day-to-day basis
  • Oversee performance appraisals and staff development
  • Plan and conduct regular staff meetings
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people
  • Manage human resources, including benefits, employee vacations, wage and salary administration

Policy and Planning Responsibilities (30%)

  • With Director, develop a long-range strategic plan to achieve SHUMLA’s mission including a time and task-line designed to make consistent and timely progress
  • Oversee implementation of strategic plan
  • Oversee development of programs
  • Develop organizational and financial plans
  • Make decisions regarding staff and resource allocations
  • Represent SHUMLA and the Director at key meetings
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Develop staffing plan, timeline and objectives for new initiatives
  • Set benchmarks and monitor progress of existing and new initiatives

Development, Financial & Grants Management (35%)

  • Oversee the production and administration of a development plan
  • Oversee all fundraising programs and goals, including annual giving, corporate fund raising, special events, proposal writing, and planned giving
  • Oversee writing and submission of grant proposals
  • Serve as liaison with community partners
  • Work with the bookkeeper and CPA to prepare and maintain accounting records, budget data, and cash flow projections
  • Ensure compliance with any and all financial and contract reporting requirements for private or public funding
  • Ensure complete and up-to-date operating procedures for all accounting and financial controls
       
  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
  • Understands the mission of the organization
  • Understands the technical aspects of managing a nonprofit organization
  • Possesses effective leadership and organizational skills
  • Demonstrates:
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, legal documents, professional journals, and government regulations
    • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
    • Independent judgment in the development, implementation, and evaluation of plans, procedures, and policies
    • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of research, grant administration, contract administration and negotiation, and fiscal and organizational management
    • Knowledge of accounting principles, budget development, and management process
    • Skill to use computer equipment and associated software packages
    • Ability to work with diversity of clients including teachers, administrators, students and the general public
    • Ability to establish priorities, work independently and as a team member, and proceed with objectives and assignments without direct supervision
       
  Credentials and Experience:  

Applicant should hold at least a Bachelor’s level degree in Business or related field, or have 7+ years related experience with expertise in program planning, project management, marketing, and new business development. Familiarity with educational not-for-profits and/or academic organizations is helpful, as is an interest in archeological research and education designed to connect people of all ages with the land and their cultural heritage.

       
  Special Requirement:  

Willingness to assist other staff with any aspect of SHUMLA's to help accomplish the organization’s mission.
