Pecos River Kids Day Camps
Location
Pecos River Kids Day Camps are conducted in a wide range of locations. Some programs' activities are held on the SHUMLA campus, which is situated along
the Pecos River approximately 50 miles west of Del Rio, Texas. Other
activities are conducted at Seminole Canyon State Historical Park, Judge Roy
Bean Visitor Center, Amistad National Recreation Area, canoe and boat trips
on local waterways, and visits to archeological sites in the area are also
included.
Duration
Pecos River Kids Day Camps are full day programs.
Instructors
SHUMLA instructors include archeologists, botanists, biologists,
geologists, astronomers, artists, and historians, as well as experts in a
wide range of other areas, such as Native American lifeways and adventure
challenge activities.
Activities
Students from local schools spend a full day at SHUMLA
engaging in activities similar to those included in Pecos Adventure Camps.
Working in conjunction with local teachers, SHUMLA will also
develop and offer programs that address specific topics of study or
interest. A low student-to-teacher ratio — usually 5 to 1 — is maintained
in order to ensure that students get the most out of their experiences and
to foster the student-teacher bond.
A hands-on, learning-by-doing approach to teaching is used throughout
all of our programs.
Cost
Program cost is determined on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, foundation monies are available to help public schools. Funding availability varies by year. For pricing or registration, please contact SHUMLA's Education Director at 432-292-4848 or education@shumla.org. |
