Pecos River Kids Adventure Camps
Location
Pecos Adventure Camps are conducted primarily at the SHUMLA School. Our
1,600-acre campus is situated along the Pecos River approximately 50 miles
west of Del Rio, Texas. Day trips to Seminole Canyon State Historical Park,
Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center, Amistad National Recreation Area, canoe and
boat trips on local waterways, and visits to archeological sites in the
area are also included.
Duration
The duration of Pecos Adventure Camps is flexible and can be designed
specifically to meet the needs of your group. Most programs, however, extend
over six days and five nights.
Instructors
SHUMLA instructors include archeologists, botanists, biologists,
geologists, astronomers, artists, and historians, as well as experts in a
wide range of other areas, such as Native American lifeways and adventure
challenge activities.
Activities
Some of the locations visited in these programs require hiking into and out of rock shelters located in the walls of canyons. Click here to see the range of trails leading to some of these sites. Not all trails that might be used are shown.
The SHUMLA School provides topics and problems that can be adjusted to the
developmental needs of the students. Examples of program topics include: The
River Runs Wild; Living off the Land; Desert Survival; Home on the Range;
Pecos Railways; and Art for Life's Sake. Some of the many activities that
can be incorporated into your program include:
- Identifying plants used for food and medicine, making baskets, fishing
poles, paint, and stone tools from local resources and visiting ancient
rock art sites. These activities and others connect students to their
natural environment and to their cultural heritage.
- High-level physically challenging activities such as rock-climbing,
rappelling, canoeing, kayaking, and backpacking, help young people see
themselves as capable and powerful.
- Visits to nearby Seminole Canyon State Historical Park and the Judge
Roy Bean Visitor Center to learn about the regional archeology and local
history connect the students to their community and to the prehistory and
history of their state.
Accommodations
SHUMLA School provides large 10' x 10' canvas tents that comfortably
accommodate two students. Each tent is equipped with cots, a table, and two
chairs.
Cost
The cost of Pecos Adventure Camp programs varies according to duration. The
average cost is approximately $125 per student per day. This price includes
accommodations, all meals, entrance fees to parks, and instruction. The
SHUMLA School is actively engaged in fundraising activities to underwrite
the cost of this program for youth organizations. Limited scholarships are
currently available.
