SHUMLA Adventures

SHUMLA Adventures offers a wide range of programs to people of all ages. Each program offers an opportunity to step away from urban life-styles and experience first-hand how people for millennia have met the challenges of survival. Activities are designed to bridge the gap between art and science as we study the human use of materials, land, and art. Programs incorporate innovative studies in archeology, ecology, natural history, prehistoric lifeways, botany, and art. (Program descriptions)

Incorporated into each program are some of the following activities:

  • Hiking through canyons and canoeing rivers
  • Visiting some of the most spectacular rock art sites in the world
  • Learning how to make paint the prehistoric way
  • Learning about the plants used for food and medicine in prehistory
  • Building an earth oven to cook desert plants using prehistoric techniques
  • Creating baskets and producing stone tools using locally available resources
  • Evening discussions on the "work of art"  in the past and present
  • Evening lectures on the history and archeology of the region
  • Music by the fireplace

Some of the locations visited in these programs require hiking into and out of rock shelters located in the walls of canyons. Click here to see the range of trails leading to some of these sites. Not all trails that might be used are shown.
