Pecos Teacher Training Camps
Location
Pecos Teacher Training Camps are conducted primarily on the SHUMLA campus
and surrounding points of interest; however, workshops provided by the
SHUMLA School may also be conducted at other locations across the state.
Duration
The duration of most Teacher Training Camps is flexible and can be designed
to meet the needs of your group; however the typical program extends over
three days and two nights.
Instructors
Instructors include educators, archeologists, botanists, biologists,
geologists, astronomers, artists, and historians, as well as experts in a
wide range of other areas, such as Native American lifeways and adventure
challenge activities.
Activities
Some of the locations visited in these programs require hiking into and out of rock shelters located in the walls of canyons. Click here to see the range of trails leading to some of these sites. Not all trails that might be used are shown.
The Pecos Teacher Training Camp activities vary depending upon the duration
and location of the program and the needs of the group. The SHUMLA School is
currently offering the following 3-day Pecos Teacher Training Camp for
staff development credit:
Investigating and Evaluating Environmental Issues of the Rio
Grande/Rio Bravo Valley
This case study was developed by the Center for Instruction, Staff
Development, and Evaluation, in Carbondale, Illinois. The workshop is designed to
help prepare middle and secondary school teachers to be able to guide
students in conducting autonomous Rio Grande issue investigations, and to
help teachers provide opportunities for students to develop ownership and
empowerment needed to actually take positive citizenship action regarding
their issue investigations.
Each day, following workshop instruction, teachers will engage in a wide
variety of activities, including:
- Hiking through the canyons and canoeing the Pecos River or Rio Grande
- Visiting 4,000 year old archeological sites containing some of the
finest rock paintings in the world
- Learning how to make baskets, stone tools, and paint from locally
available resources
- Learning about the plants used for food and medicine in prehistory
- Evening lectures on Texas history and prehistory
- Campfire songs and some of the best star-gazing in Texas
